Schulman Bhattacharya Announces the Promotion of Two Attorneys to Counsel

Jan 17

Schulman Bhattacharya is pleased to announce that Sabina Schiller and James “Jake” Schaller have been promoted to the position of Counsel.

Sabina Schiller joined the Firm in 2018 as an associate attorney.  She worked previously for a well-known boutique commercial litigation firm, where she successfully represented major international corporations and high-net-worth individuals in all stages of complex commercial controversies in federal and state courts across the country.  Ms. Schiller earned her Juris Doctor from Emory University School of Law, where she served as Notes and Comments Editor for the Emory International Law Review.

Since coming to Schulman Bhattacharya, Ms. Schiller has been a key member of our ExeGi Pharma and Claudio De Simone litigation team, assisting with the Firm’s $18 million trial win in Maryland federal court, successful defense of that judgment on appeal to the Fourth Circuit, and helping the Firm win dismissal of $160 million in state court claims brought by Alfasigma USA, Inc.  She was also instrumental in the Firm’s representation of Benihana of Tokyo, LLC, operator at the time of the successful Japanese-themed restaurant chain outside of the United States.

Jake Schaller came to the Firm in 2019 after practicing as a commercial litigator for six years at a large Maryland-based law firm.  Mr. Schaller has represented a broad-based group of clients, taking cases through all stages of the dispute resolution process.   His numerous corporate and individual clients have praised his responsiveness, poise under pressure, and ability to distill complicated issues quickly, while keeping them focused on their ultimate goals. Mr. Schaller graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree.  He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Schaller was an award-winning sports journalist for several publications including The Washington Post and The Colorado Springs Gazette.

Among many noteworthy achievements at Schulman Bhattacharya, Mr. Schaller served as second chair on the litigation team that won a landslide victory for Firm client Sachs Capital, LLC in its fight over a nearly $65 million share of the sale of a major national petroleum company.  Mr. Schaller was a key contributor to winning summary judgment valued at approximately $65 million, convincing the court also to award the Firm’s attorney’s fees and make a finding of bad faith against the opposing parties.  Mr. Schaller also played a pivotal role in winning the dismissal of all eleven counterclaims asserted against Sachs and related parties.

Jeremy W. Schulman, Managing Member of Schulman Bhattacharya, stated: “We are proud to be able to recognize the many accomplishments of Sabina Schiller and Jake Schaller, and thrilled to have them on our litigation team in their new role as Counsel.  They add tremendous value to the work that we do every day; our clients benefit from their tireless effort and formidable skill.  We look forward to working with them for many years to come.”
